Features of Scientific Research
Scientific research adheres to the standards of the scientific method. It relies on systematic observation and reasoning rather than guesswork. Data are summarized precisely, establishing logical relationships among propositions that explain causal connections. Generalizations and theories are continuously tested, corrected, rejected, or refined so that new theories build upon earlier ones. Importantly, scientific inquiry does not judge whether phenomena, events, or institutions are good or bad; it seeks only to explain and understand them.
Based on this orientation, the following are the core features of scientific research:
- Purposiveness: Scientific research is always directed toward a clear objective. It begins with a specific purpose, which guides the investigation and provides direction. Without a defined purpose, research risks becoming unfocused and unproductive.
- Rigor: Rigor implies carefulness, exactness, and thoroughness. A strong theoretical foundation and sound methodological design add rigor, ensuring reliability of findings. Lack of rigor can lead to weak designs, errors in process, and flawed conclusions.
- Testability: A hallmark of scientific research is hypothesis development and testing. Hypotheses are logically formulated and examined against empirical data, making the process verifiable and systematic.
- Objectivity: Scientific research strives for neutrality by minimizing personal bias. Conclusions are derived from empirical evidence and logical analysis, rather than subjective opinions or emotions.
- Replicability: Findings should be verifiable when similar studies are conducted under comparable conditions. Replication builds confidence in results and allows other researchers to confirm the validity of conclusions.
- Generalizability: Research findings should have broader applicability beyond the immediate setting in which the study was conducted. Generalizability ensures that results contribute to knowledge and practice in wider contexts.
- Parsimony: Scientific explanations aim for simplicity and economy, offering clear understanding with the fewest possible assumptions. Effective research optimizes resources while providing meaningful insights.
- Precision: Precision refers to the closeness of research findings to reality. Scientific inquiry emphasizes accuracy, ensuring that results closely reflect actual conditions and provide dependable insights.

The basic nature of research is to advance knowledge and seek solutions to problems. It is a systematic and disciplined process that enables the discovery of new facts, the validation of existing theories, and the development of practical applications. Research refines understanding, offering logical explanations for complex phenomena.

Scientific Process: Research is a systematic and accurate process of investigation that gathers new knowledge based on facts and data, usually derived from primary or firsthand sources. The researcher strives to eliminate personal bias, emotions, or preferences.

Originates with a Question or Problem: Every research activity begins with a problem or question. It requires identifying and defining the issue in clear and unambiguous terms, often driven by the researcher’s insight, observation, and imagination.

Division into Sub-Problems: Complex research problems are often divided into manageable sub-problems, which together contribute to addressing the main problem more effectively.

Clear Expression of Objectives: Research is logical and objective-driven. It requires explicit expression of goals that guide the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.

The Scientific Research Process
The research process is often compared to a journey: first, deciding what problem or question to investigate, and second, determining how to investigate it. Scientific research proceeds in logical stages, ensuring that findings are systematic, valid, and meaningful. Scholars such as Theodorson and Theodorson (1969) emphasize defining the problem, developing hypotheses, planning procedures, gathering and analyzing data, and linking conclusions to theory. Saunders, Lewis, and Thornhill (2009) also highlight stages such as topic formulation, literature review, research design, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
The key stages of the research process can be outlined as follows:
- Identify a Problem: Research begins with inquiry, often triggered by observation, doubt, or curiosity. Identifying a real issue or gap is the first step. A well-chosen problem ensures relevance and practical or theoretical contribution.
- Define the Problem: A vague idea must be narrowed into a precise, researchable question. This involves isolating the core issue, understanding its scope, and stating it in clear, unambiguous terms. A poorly defined problem risks weak or misleading findings.
- Review the Literature: Existing studies are reviewed to understand what is already known, where gaps exist, and what theories or frameworks may apply. Literature review also helps in identifying dependent and independent variables and building conceptual and theoretical foundations.
- Formulate Hypotheses or Research Questions: Based on insights from theory and prior studies, hypotheses (tentative assumptions) are developed. These guide the research by focusing attention on specific relationships or factors. Hypotheses serve as the roadmap, keeping the investigation structured and relevant.
- Design the Research: A clear plan is drawn up to address the problem. This includes choosing the research approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed), deciding on population and sampling methods, selecting tools for data collection, and outlining procedures for analysis. Planning reduces risks and ensures reliability.
- Develop Data Collection Instruments: At this stage, tools such as questionnaires, interview guides, observation checklists, or tests are prepared. Ensuring their validity (measuring what they are intended to measure) and reliability (consistency) is crucial for credible outcomes.
- Collect Data: Data are gathered systematically from the field or secondary sources. Depending on the research design, this may involve surveys, interviews, experiments, or document reviews. Accuracy and ethical conduct are vital to maintain the integrity of the research.
- Analyze Data: Collected data are organized, processed, and examined to uncover patterns or test hypotheses. Quantitative data are subjected to statistical tests, while qualitative data are categorized and interpreted thematically. Analysis connects raw data to meaningful insights.
- Draw Conclusions: Once the data are analyzed, conclusions are derived in relation to the research problem. This step answers the original question, highlights solutions, and evaluates whether the hypotheses are supported or rejected. Conclusions may also point toward theoretical contributions or practical recommendations.
- Report Findings: The final step is to record, interpret, and disseminate the results. Findings are structured into a report or thesis, with discussions, implications, and generalizations. Applied research may recommend strategies or solutions, while basic research may refine existing theories or suggest new areas for study.
