Introduction
Medical tourism has grown into a global phenomenon, with millions of people traveling abroad to seek medical treatments every year. As healthcare costs continue to rise in many countries and waiting times remain long, people are looking for affordable and high-quality medical care beyond their home countries. Polaris Market Research predicts that by 2022, the global medical tourism industry was valued at approximately USD 97.31 billion. Experts predict it will grow significantly, reaching around USD 273.72 billion by 2032, with an annual growth rate of 11.8% from 2023 to 2032. Following the pandemic, the market has expanded to nearly USD 272.70 billion, as more patients, especially from developed countries, seek affordable and high-quality medical care abroad. The number of people traveling internationally for healthcare is higher than ever before. This trend has led to an enormous boom in the medical tourism industry, which is now worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Many patients travel abroad for specialized treatments such as cardiac surgeries, cosmetic procedures, and advanced medical interventions that may not be available or are too expensive in their own country.
Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing region for medical tourism, with countries like Thailand, India, South Korea, and Singapore attracting international patients due to their advanced healthcare facilities, well-trained medical professionals, and competitive pricing. While medical tourism is a growing industry in many countries, Nepal faces several challenges in positioning itself as a major destination for healthcare travelers. Limited healthcare infrastructure, high costs in private hospitals, and overcrowded public hospitals have led many Nepalese citizens to seek medical treatment abroad.
Despite having skilled medical professionals, Nepal has struggled to develop its healthcare system to meet the growing demands of its population. As a result, many Nepalese patients travel to countries like India, Thailand, and Germany for better and more affordable treatment options. However, the factors that influence these medical travel decisions remain complex.
This article presents the insight of the factors driving Nepalese patients to seek medical care abroad and how these elements contribute to the rising trend of outbound medical tourism.
Status of Outbound Medical Tourism from Nepal
Medical tourism is no longer just an option for the wealthy; it is becoming a necessity for many people who are looking for better healthcare options abroad. Nepalese patients, in particular, are increasingly seeking treatment outside their country for multiple reasons. Research shows that a growing number of Nepalese individuals are willing to travel abroad for medical treatment, mainly because of the quality of healthcare services available overseas. Patients prioritize well-equipped hospitals, experienced medical professionals, and a more personalized approach to care when making their decisions.
Safety is another critical factor influencing outbound medical tourism. Many Nepalese patients trust international healthcare systems due to their strict medical standards, reliable diagnostic procedures, and experienced doctors. This sense of trust encourages more people to consider traveling abroad for medical procedures.
Cost is also a major determinant when choosing medical destinations. Patients often look for affordable treatment options without compromising on quality. Countries with reasonable medical costs and lower living expenses become attractive destinations for medical tourists. Similarly, the availability of insurance coverage for medical procedures abroad plays a crucial role in decision-making. Many patients seek treatment in countries where their insurance policies provide coverage, ensuring financial support during their medical journey.
Apart from healthcare quality and cost, cultural and language considerations also play a role in shaping the patient’s decision. Although not the primary reason for choosing a destination, familiarity with the language and culture can make the medical journey smoother and more comfortable. Additionally, word-of-mouth recommendations significantly influence medical tourism. Patients rely heavily on recommendations from friends, family, and online reviews before making their final decision. Positive testimonials and shared experiences build trust in international healthcare services, making certain destinations more popular among medical travelers.
Statistical findings highlight the strong connection between outbound medical tourism and factors such as insurance policy, language and culture, procedural safety, service quality, treatment costs, and word-of-mouth recommendations. Among these, service quality and word-of-mouth communication were found to have the strongest influence on a patient’s decision to travel abroad for treatment.
Factors Affecting Outbound Medical Tourism
Several factors play a significant role in influencing Nepalese patients to seek medical treatment abroad. Research findings indicate that two major factors—service quality and word-of-mouth communication—have the most substantial impact on outbound medical tourism.
Service quality is the most influential factor, as patients prioritize healthcare excellence above all else. High-quality medical care, advanced technology, well-trained doctors, and well-equipped hospitals are essential considerations when choosing a medical destination. Patients want to ensure that they receive the best possible care for their medical conditions, and they are willing to travel to a different country if it means better treatment outcomes.
Word-of-mouth communication is another strong driver of outbound medical tourism. Patients rely on personal recommendations from friends, family, or even strangers who have had positive experiences with medical treatment abroad. Trust plays a crucial role in decision-making, and hearing firsthand success stories encourages more individuals to seek medical care internationally.
On the other hand, factors such as insurance policies, language and culture, procedural safety, and treatment costs were found to have little to no significant impact on outbound medical tourism from Nepal. Although these factors do influence patient preferences, they are not the primary motivators for traveling abroad for healthcare.
Nepalese medical tourists prioritize high-quality care and reliable recommendations over other concerns. While insurance policies may provide financial support, they are not the deciding factor in whether a patient chooses to go abroad. Similarly, language and cultural differences are less significant, as many popular medical tourism destinations have English-speaking staff and interpreters to assist international patients.
Insights
Outbound medical tourism is driven by multiple factors, but at its core, it is about access to better healthcare. Nepalese patients traveled abroad when they felt that their home country’s healthcare system could not provide the medical services they needed. The study of Biswakarma and Basnet (2025) confirmed that service quality and word-of-mouth communication are the most critical factors influencing this decision of Nepalese to avail themselves of medical treatment outside Nepal. Patients want to feel confident that they are receiving top-notch care, and they trust recommendations from others who have had successful medical treatments abroad.
While cost is often a major concern in healthcare, to be a primary driver for Nepalese patients traveling abroad. This is because the Nepalese healthcare system lacks advanced medical facilities and sufficient resources, leading patients to prioritize quality over affordability. Even if certain medical procedures are available in Nepal, they may not meet international standards, pushing patients to seek better alternatives abroad.
Many Nepalese patients believed that foreign hospitals are safer and more advanced, reinforcing their decision to seek treatment abroad. The lack of modern medical infrastructure in Nepal further strengthens this belief, making outbound medical tourism a necessity rather than a luxury for many individuals.
The rise of outbound medical tourism has significant implications for Nepal’s healthcare system. Policymakers must take strategic steps to improve the quality of medical care within the country. Investing in modern medical equipment, enhancing hospital infrastructure, and training medical professionals will help build trust in Nepal’s healthcare sector and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad. Additionally, Nepal can position itself as a potential medical tourism destination by marketing its healthcare services internationally. If Nepali hospitals can offer high-quality medical care at competitive prices, they may attract medical tourists from other countries, creating new opportunities for economic growth.
Furthermore, addressing the factors that drive outbound medical tourism, particularly service quality, should be a top priority for Nepal’s healthcare industry. Ensuring that patients have access to advanced medical treatments and well-trained professionals will help retain them within the country and reduce the growing reliance on medical tourism. By strengthening its healthcare infrastructure, Nepal can not only improve its domestic healthcare system but also establish itself as a competitive player in the global medical tourism industry.
Conclusion
Medical tourism is an evolving industry that continues to shape global healthcare trends. Nepalese patients are increasingly traveling abroad for medical treatment due to limited healthcare facilities, high costs of private healthcare, and overcrowded public hospitals. The two main factors driving outbound medical tourism from Nepal are service quality and word-of-mouth communication. Patients prioritize top-tier healthcare services and rely on personal recommendations when choosing where to seek medical treatment.
While other factors such as insurance policies, procedural safety, treatment costs, and cultural considerations do play a role in shaping medical tourism trends, they are secondary to the need for high-quality medical care. The findings of this study emphasize the need for Nepal to invest in improving its healthcare infrastructure to retain patients within the country.
